今天我们要给大家讲的习惯用语是和英文里的skin有关。 由于皮肤是在外表又很薄，所以美国人有这么一种说法：skin-deep。

Deep就是深浅的深。Skin-deep从字面来解释就是：像皮肤那样深，实际上也就是中文里说的“肤浅”。当一个人感情不真实，或者一件事并不像它表面上看起来的那样，人们往往会用skin-deep这个常用语来形容它。我们来举个例子：

"Joe likes to brag about all the friends he has. But to tell the truth, his friendships are only skin-deep -- the only person he really cares about deep down in his heart is himself."

这句话的意思是：“乔伊老是喜欢吹嘘他有好多朋友。但是，说实话，他和这些朋友的友情都很肤浅。他心目里真正关心的一个人就是他自己。”

像这种只关心自己，不真心关心朋友的人不仅在美国有,在哪儿都能碰到。一般来说,美国人是很热情,以助人为乐的。

美国人有一句老话,那就是：beauty is only skin-deep。

Beauty就是美丽的意思。Beauty is only skin-deep，这个说法的意思就是：美貌只是表面现象。换句话也就是说，外表的美貌并不能说明这个人的本质。下面这个例句就说明了这一点：

"Sure, Mrs. Brown is the best-looking woman in town. But you know what they say: beauty is only skin-deep. Underneath, she's about as mean and sti ngy as anybody can be."

这个人说：“当然罗，布朗太太是当地最漂亮的一个女人。但是，你知道大家都在说：美貌只是表面现象。实际上，她比谁都刻薄和小气。”
