Error Correction (15 minutes)
Directions:This part consists of a short passage. In
this passage,there are altogether 10 mistakes, one in
each numbered line. You may have to change a word, add a
word or delete a word. Mark out the mistakes and put the
corrections in the blanks provided. If you change a
word, cross it out and write the correct word in the
corresponding blank. If you add a word, put an insertion
mark(∧ ) in the right place and write the missing word
in the blank. If you delete a word, cross it out and put
a slash( /) in the blank.
There is a popular belief among parents that schools are
no longer interested in spelling. No school I have
taught has ever ignored spelling or considered it
important as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly
different ideas about how to teach it, or how much
priority (重点) it must be given over general language
development and written ability. The problem is, how to
encourage a child to express himself freely and
confidently in writing without holding him back with the
complexities of spelling?
If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher
’s interest, clearly a bright child will be like to
“play safe”. He will tend to write only words with his
range and choose to avoid adventurous language. That is
why teachers often encouraging the early use of
dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than
technical ability.
I was shocking to read on the bottom of a sensitive
piece of writing about personal experience: “This work
is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and
your writing is eligible.” It may have been a sharp
criticism of the pupil’s technical abilities in
writing, but it was also a sad reflection at the teacher
who has omitted to read the essay, which contained any
beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The
teacher’s wrong not to draw attention to the errors,
but if his priority centered on the child’s ideas, as
expression of his disappointment with the presentation
would have given the pupil more motivation to seek
improvement.
