S. H. E. is going to sing at the CCTV annual Spring Festival Evening Party, is that true? cried out Peng Weiye, a Senior 2 girl in Shanghai and die – hard (铁杆的)S. H. E. fan..
After checking it on the Internet, Peng quickly phoned friends to spread the news. For fans like her, S. H. E.’ s performance is perhaps the only part of the old fashioned evening to get excited about.
The Taiwanese band is made up of Selina, Hebe and Ella. Their name comes from the first letter of each of the singers’ English names.
Last week S. H. E. announced they will perform in Las Vegas, US, over Christmas and then in Guangzhou on January 15.
At their Shanghai show on October 30, hundreds of parents waited outside the Hongkou Stadium. Inside, thousands of teenagers sang, cried and shouted as the band performed.
“I love their music, healthy image and everything related to them. Thank God that, although my parents don’t understand why I love them so much, they still bought me a ticket for that show,” said Peng about the Shanghai performance.
It is not just on the mainland that the three girls have thrilled (make sb. excited) audiences. In the past year the band has passed through Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Singapore and Malaysia.
When the three high school girls entered a singing contest in Taiwan in 2000, none of them ever dreamed of being a superstar. “We had never met before, and we didn’t talk at all at the beginning,” recalled Ella.
When asked about the secret of their success, she said, “Our average looks and not-so-expensive clothes keep us close to our fans. We are happy to be the girl next door, your singing sisters.”
“It’s really a magical journey, from day-dreaming high school girls to singers performing on the same stage as our idols. Nothing but magical,” she said.
56.What makes Peng Weiye, a senior 2 girl, so excited?

D.S. H. E. will perform on the annual CCTV Spring Festival Evening.

B.Their idols had a deep influence on them.
C.A singing contest gave their idea of the band name.
D.The first letter of each of the singers’ English names.
58.What do you know about Peng Weiye?
A.She stayed outside the Hongkou Stadium to listen to S. H. E.
B.She will watch the performance in Guangzhou on January 15.
C.She pays close attention to everything about S. H. E.
D.She appreciates that her parents understood her well.
59.Which is true about S. H. E. ?
A.They caused a storm of excitement in Southeast Asia.
B.They have well prepared to perform with their idols.

In America , drivers’ education is part of the regular high school curriculum . Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver’s education . However, unlike other courses , it is not given during the regular school year . Instead it is a summer course . The course is divided up into two parts : class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practise driving . Class time is not unlike any other class . The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver’s license .
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel ) and practise starting steering , backing up , parking , switching lanes , turning corners , and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car . Each student is required to drive a total of six hours . The students are divided up into groups of four . The students and the instructor go out driving for two hour blocks of time . Thus , each student gets half an hour driving time per outing . The instructor and “driver” sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back .
Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes , one on the driver’s side and one on the other side where the instructor sits . Thus , if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over . The car also has another special feature . On the top of the car is a sign that reads : STUDENT DRIVER .That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution (小心) because the student driver is a beginning driver , not very experienced and prone to driving slowly .
After the student has passed the drier’s education course and reached the appropriate age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old ) , they can go to a designated state office to take their driver’s test , which is made up of an eye examination , a written test , and a road test . The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver’s license . If the person did well in his or her driver’s education class , he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver’s license .

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly
Dear Sir/Madam,
I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.
The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grownup, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.
I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and socalled “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Daniels
67. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?
A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.
B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.
C. To express his appreciation of the programme.
D. To have his story told on the programme.
68. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to      .
A. describe how painful his early experience was
B. draw a direct response from Alison Burnham
C. show how the programme made him think
D. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson
69. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because      .
A. he hadn’t got a return ticket
B. he had lost his bus ticket
C. he didn’t like big crowds
D. he missed the bus home
70. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?
A. He should have told the conductor then.
B. He should have been well treated.
C. He regrets going to school alone.
D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast (对照) , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt (适应) change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity (不安全) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
71.In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.
A.succeed in climbing up the social ladder
B.grow up from his own achievements
C.face difficulties and take up challenges
D.aim high and reach his goal each time
72.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?
A.Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.
B.Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
C.Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
       D.Father’s salary rose from 5, 000 to 7,000.
73.For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT _______.
       A.being curious about more changes
       B.being quick in self-adaptation
C.having an open mind to new experiences
D.staying away from failures and challenges
74.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.It is not so easy to measure personal growth.
B.To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable.
C.There are only two ways to see a person’s growth.
D.If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.
75.The best title for this passage should be ______.
A.Facing New Challenges                        B.Growth—Product or Process
C.Two Basic Ways of Growth                 D.Overcoming Internal Fears

(Text 1)
W: What a terrible sight! The whole building was on fire and thick smoke covered the sky.
M: What caused it?
W: Maybe a smoker; maybe the electricity. Nobody knows.
(Text 2)
M: Would you tell Paul I am sorry I lost his radio?
W: Hadn’t you better tell him yourself?
(Text 3)
W: Oh, I just remembered. Could you stop at that shop over there? I need to buy some flowers. It won’t be long.
M: Sure, take your time.
(Text 4)
M: The city is going to pull down those houses and put up a new shopping center.
W: Another shopping center? That’s nothing new.
(Text 5)
M: If I were you, I’d live in the city instead of going to work by train.
W: But the country is so beautiful in spring and autumn.
(Text 6)
M: How many pieces of luggage do you want to check in, sir?
W: I have two.
M: Fine. Do you have any handbags?
W: Yes, I have these two small shoulder bags.
M: That’s fine. But your luggage is three kilos overweight, so I’ll have to charge you.
W: Just a minute, please. I’ll carry my dictionary in my hand and then it won’t be overweight.
M: That’s fine, sir. Your flight leaves from Gate 13A at 7:15 exactly.
W: OK. Thank you.
(Text 7)
W: May I help you?
M: Yes, I would like some tickets for next week’s pop music concerts.
W: Which concert do you wish to have? There will be three: Thursday, Friday, Sunday evenings.
M: Are there still seats for all three concerts?
W: Not many, and very few together. How many tickets do you want?
M: Just two, and it would be better to have them together. The date is less important.
W: I have two together for Sunday evening.
M: That would be fine. How much are they?
W: Twenty dollars each. That will be forty dollars for the two tickets.
M: Yes, here you are. Thank you.
W: You’re welcome.
(Text 8)
M: This seems to be a nice place. We don’t have to wait in line.
W: No. It’s early. There aren’t many people at this hour.
M: Let’s go over there and get a knife, fork, and spoon, and a tray.
W: What shall we have?
M: Let’s have a look at the menu over there.
W: I’ll have a steak. It’s fifty cents. What will you have?
M: I’ll have fried eggs. It’s forty cents.
W: With dessert and coffee, it’s going to cost about seventy or eighty cents.
M: That isn’t very expensive.
W: In a cafeteria you serve yourself so price is more reasonable.
M: This is really a very good idea, where shall we sit?
W: Let’s sit here near the window.
(Text 9)
M: Hello, Carol. What seems to be the trouble?
W: So kind of you to come to see me. I don’t know what’s wrong. Three days ago, while planting roses in the garden, it rained and I got completely wet, and then I’ve coughed since that night. Now I ache all over.
M: Well, let me take a look at you. Are you still coughing very much?
W: Yes, and my stomach has been upset. In addition, I always feel sick.
M: Hmmm. You’ve run a high fever, I’m afraid.
W: Oh, no wonder I’ve got a hot face.
M: Well, Carol, I think you’ve got flu. These days there’s been a lot of flu going around. I want you to stay in bed for at least two days, drink plenty of water, and take the medicine three times a day. I’ll look in on you tomorrow morning.
W: Very good. Thank you so much.
(Text 10)
How does television affect our lives? It can be helpful to those who carefully choose the programs that they watch and harmful to those who watch it too much.
In China, many people worry that children and young people are watching too much television. A survey of 300 youngsters in Shanghai last year showed that, on average, they spent half of their free time, that is two hours and a half, watching television. And two-thirds hours-reading stories. Another survey of school-age children in Wuhan found that half of them said they read very little.
During the Barcelona Olympic Games, tens of millions of Chinese viewers stayed up late to watch the opening ceremonies and other programs. And television is quickly taking the place of printed material as the major source of news for most Chinese. A recent survey in Beijing found that 63% of those surveyed got their news from television through CCTV and TV stations.

Friday Nov.12,2004                                                     Sunny
This evening I went to the KTV with some of my good friends .
This was the first time that I had been to a KTV and at first I didn’t want to go . I was (had been ) in a bad mood the whole afternoon because I didn’t do well in the math exam . At the KTV, everybody sang his favorite songs very happily except me —I as only one of the audience . I dare not have a try because I was afraid that I couldn’t sing well . Encouraged by my classmates , I picked up the microphone and sang an English song entitled “I believe I can fly”.
I have become cheerful now and above all I’ve regained self-confidence . I believe that the worst enemy in one’s life is oneself . I shouldn’t lose heart just because of one or two failures because I still have chances to try .
